Teaser Tuesday: The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham

“Walter looked at his guest with a cold and ironic gaze, but he was evidently not a little amused by him, and he made an effort to show a civil interest in topics of which Kitty was well aware he knew nothing. A faint smile lingered on his lips. But Kitty, she knew not why, was filled with awe. In the house of that dead missionary, over against the stricken city, they seemed immeasurably apart from all the world. Three solitary creatures and strangers to each other.”

The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham p 79.

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

  1. Interesting teaser. I love the cover for this one. This book is new to me. I’ll be looking forward to your review.

    1. It is a beautiful cover isn’t it?! I’ve got about 70 pages left so I’m hoping to finish it soon and get a review done.

  2. Interesting teaser! Somerset Maugham is one of my favourite writers 🙂 How are you finding ‘The Painted Veil’? Have you read his books ‘The Razor’s Edge’ and ‘Of Human Bondage’?

    1. I’m enjoying it, it’s my first Maugham. I have already seen the recent film adaptation of The Painted Veil, so it’s been interesting comparing the two. So far it seems the film was a pretty faithful adaptation.

      1. Interesting to know that this is your first Maugham. Glad to know that you are enjoying it. Looking forward to reading your review of it. If you would like to read more of his books, I would recommend ‘The Razor’s Edge’ and ‘Of Human Bondage’. Both of them are wonderful! I suspect I might have said this before – Maugham is one of my favourite authors 🙂

  3. This cover is so pretty! It makes me want to read the book without knowing what it’s about!

    1. I love the cover, I paid a bit more to get this edition as opposed to the film tie in. Though the film tie in is quite a nice cover as film tie ins go.

  4. Great teaser, I really want to try some Maugham now. And I absolutely love the cover, vintage chooses the best cover art 🙂

    1. They really do, so many of my classics and modern classics are vintage because of their consistently great covers. 🙂

  5. Love to hear what you think of this book. I see you have Michael Palin’s New Europe to read- hope you enjoy, he describes things so well (and is no much nicer IMHO than Bill Bryson).

    1. Yes I have New Europe out from the library! I will read it soon. I haven’t read any Bill Bryson, but lots of people seem to love him so Palin must be good! 😀

  6. I love the cover! 🙂 What a fun meme!!!

    1. It’s a really beautiful cover. 🙂

  7. The woman on the cover looks very elegant and mysterious…. Incidentally, I discovered your blog when I was searching for book images for Lisa See’s SHANGHAI GIRLS, which I just reviewed in my blog. Your blog (with the novel’s beautiful cover) and your review last year came up. I liked your review & kept reading bits and pieces!
